Father and mother will soon have joint custody of their children - this applies regardless of whether the parents are married or not . The Council of Ministers approved a bill on child custody on Friday, thereby strengthening the rights of unmarried fathers.
Accordingly, both parents automatically receive visitation rights for their child. This is to prevent one parent from taking the child away from the other or attempting to alienate it. Even if custody is transferred to only one parent, the other is allowed to see the child and even let it live with them. Both mother and father are obliged to support the child in proportion to their income. In addition, a mediation system will be introduced to support parents in crisis situations. With the new custody system, the Council of Ministers is taking into account the fact that there are often other forms of cohabitation in addition to marriage. On the other hand, the government is adapting Luxembourg legislation to international standards, for example equality between women and men .
