Since its introduction in 2017, shared custody could now become the standard. With the introduction of the new child support law in January 2017, the concept of shared custody was included in the legislation for the first time. Admittedly, only as a possible request by the parties involved, but it was a change nonetheless. From the outset, parent organizations like the VeV have demanded that shared custody be made the first choice. This doesn't mean it's the norm, but rather that this form of custody should be chosen whenever possible.

With its recent decisions, the Federal Court is now implementing this – a very welcome development.
