A tragic story in the NZZ. A young family, 5 children, and domestic violence.
And, as is so often the case, it involves at least questionable decisions by the authorities.
In this instance, the court gave greater weight to the mother's psychiatric diagnosis than to the allegations of violence against the father and the alienation he has evidently fostered since the separation. We cannot judge whether the mother would have been up to the task, but the course of events unfortunately bears a striking resemblance to common occurrences, except that here, for once, the roles of mother and father are reversed.
We do not wish to judge the court involved or the other authorities; we merely wish to point out that these cases highlight gaps in the system, situations in which the applied processes and procedures are clearly insufficient.
The fate of the young mother, and especially that of the grandparents and children, deeply saddens us.
